– Peux-tu te présenter en quelques mots?
Tout d’abord, je voudrais remercier Nadia de me donner l’opportunité de parler aux français. Même si c’est une brève interview, c’est un honneur et un plaisir de me présenter à des gens qui vivent dans un beau pays ayant une longue histoire, et que j’ai toujours rêvé de visiter.
Laissez-moi me présenter. Mon nom est Samuel Seo, 22 ans, un rappeur-producteur en Corée. J’ai sorti 5 singles (Urban Planet – Okay / Samuel – Just Say Yes / Samuel – When You Need Me / Samuel – Tonite / Samuel – Goodbye) et 5 mixtapes (Now Or Never (2011) / Passby Mixtape (2011) / See you in a Moment (2011) / All For Nuthin’ (2012) / Two Dayz Twenty Babyz (2012)). Si je ne faisais pas mon service militaire (qui se termine le 28 février 2013), j’aurais pu sortir plus de choses, mais vu que je n’ai que quelques jours de congé (environ 25 jours par an), j’ai dû précipiter les enregistrements pour sortir 4 des mixtapes listées auparavant.
Parce que je n’ai pas eu assez de temps, presque toutes les chansons semblent un peu incomplètes et brutes. Plus tard, j’ai appris que beaucoup de gens, plus que ce que j’imaginais, ont écouté ma musique (je pensais que très peu de gens l’écouteraient), et j’en suis très reconnaissant. Je voudrais les remerciez encore une fois.

– Can you introduce yourself in few words?
First of all, I would like to thank Nadia for giving me the opportunity to speak to people of France. Although it is just a vivid interview, it’s quite an honor and great pleasure to present myself to a group of people residing in a beautiful country with a long-term history that I always dreamed about visiting.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Samuel Seo, 22 years old, a rapper-producer in South Korea. I’ve put out 5 singles (Urban Planet – Okay / Samuel – Just Say Yes / Samuel – When You Need Me / Samuel – Tonite / Samuel – Goodbye) and 5 mixtapes (Now Or Never (2011) / Passby Mixtape (2011) / See you in a Moment (2011) / All For Nuthin’ (2012) / Two Dayz Twenty Babyz (2012)). If I wasn’t doing my millitary service (which ends on 28th of Feb, 2013), I could have put out much more of my works, but since I get only few days-off (about 25 days in a year), I had to rush through every recording sessions to put out 4 Mixtapes listed above.
The fact is that the time I was given was so insufficient, almost every tracks sounded kind of sketchy and raw. Later, I’ve found out that many people, more than I have imagined, have listened to my music (I thought very few would listen to), and I’m really grateful to it. I want to thank them once again.

– 2012 touche à sa fin, donc quel(le) a été le moment(la chose) le(la) plus marquant(e) de l’année?
Avant de répondre à cette question, je voudrais dire “Joyeux noël et bonne année” à tous les lecteurs. :]
Il y a 2 choses qui me viennent à l’esprit si je dois choisir les moments les plus mémorables en 2012.
La première s’est passé en octobre, je travaillais sur ma mini-mixtape, ‘All For Nuthin’. Dès que je l’ai terminé, j’ai envoyé des emails aux promoteurs locaux comme hiphopplaya.com et ROKhiphop.com, pour qu’ils relaient l’info de la sortie de ma mixtape, comme d’habitude. A ce moment là, j’ai pensé ‘mention’ via twitter, à propos de la sortie de ma mixtape, des artistes locaux, que j’ai beaucoup admiré tout au long de ma carrière de rappeur, des gens comme Vasco, Skull, etc. Après les avoir ‘mention’, 10 ou 15 minutes après, chacun d’entre eux m’a répondu avec des messages tels que “Hey Samuel j’aime ton style” ou “Aight, cool je vais écouter ça”. Ca n’avait pas d’importance qu’ils l’écoutent ou non, mais juste le fait qu’ils m’aient prêté attention, m’a fait me sentir que j’étais vraiment bien in-the-game. C’était assez pour moi. J’étais vraiment très heureux à ce moment. 😛
La deuxième s’est passé en janvier. Je lisais un magazine de hiphop appelé The SOURCE. Je parcourais juste le magazine et je suis tombé sur leur propre évènement appelé “monthly artist promotion”. C’est une sorte de compétition pour les rookies inconnus. Après que les rookies n’aient envoyé leurs démos, le staff choisit un artiste qui serait assez bon pour travaillé avec d’autres rappeurs mondialement connus comme Jim Jones, Rick Ross et tout. Bref, dans celui que je lisais, l’artiste du mois était J-Lie. Je suis tout de suite devenu curieux de savoir “qu’est-ce-qu’il fait de lui l’artiste le plus intéressant parmi des milliers de démos?” et j’ai commencé à chercher sur internet plus de choses sur lui. Ce qui m’a surpris le plus c’est qu’il est à moitié coréen, et quand j’ai écouté son single ‘Champion’, j’en suis devenu fou, j’ai adoré sa façon de rapper et de chanter. Donc j’ai décidé de le contacter via twitter, et ça a été le début. Depuis, lui et moi somme devenus proches via twitter, on se twitte de temps en temps, et on a prévu de se rencontrer en 2013 quand il viendra à Tokyo pour son show. Le fait d’avoir faire connaissance et rencontrer une personne qui a le même sang (à moitié) et qui a gagné le rap game international m’a fait sentir que moi aussi, j’avais ne serait-ce qu’une petite chance de gagner le game. Il est devenu ma parfaite motivation.

– 2012 is coming to an end so, what was the most memorable thing/moment of the year?
Before I answer to this question, I want to say “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” to all of the readers. :]
I’ve got 2 things that come up in my mind if I have to pick some of the most memorable events that occurred in 2012.
First one occured in October. I was just working on my mini-mixtape called “All for Nuthin'”. As soon as I put an end to it, I’ve sent emails to the local promoters like hiphopplaya.com and ROKhiphop.com to throw news of my mixtape release as usual. At that time I just thought of sending mentions about my mixtape release news via twitter to the local artists, whom I really admired through my entire rap career, people like Vasco, Skull, etc. After I sent the mentions, 10 or 15 minutes later, every single one of them kindly mentioned me back messages like “Hey Samuel I love your style” or “Aight , cool I’ll definitely listen to it”. It didn’t matter whether they listened to it or not, but just by the fact that they paid attention to me made me feel like I was really playing the game in the right way. That was enough for me. I was thrilled as hell then. 😛
The second one happened in January. I was reading a hiphop magazine called “the SOURCE”. I was just skimming through the magazine and found out about their own event called “monthly artist promotion”. It’s some sort of competition for the nameless rookies. Once the rookies send their demos over, the staffs pick one artist who’s good enough to work with other famous rappers known globally such as Jim Jones, Rick Ross and all that.. Anyways, the one I was reading was promotiong and artist called “J-Lie” that month. I suddenly became so curious about “what makes him the most intriguing artist among millions of demos?” and started searching through internet to find more data about him. What surprised me the most is that he is half-Korean, and when I listened to his single called “Champion”, I was totally out of my mind. I just loved the way he rap and sing. So I just decided to contact him via twitter and that’s the start. Nowadays him and I became close via twitter, sending mentions sometimes, and we plan to meet up in 2013 when he’s coming to Tokyo for his show. The fact that I’ve got to know and see a person who’s got the same blood(half though) and has actually winning the international rap game made me feel like I, too, have even a small possibility to win the game. He became my perfect motivation.

– Quel(le)s sont tes résolutions/souhaits pour 2013?
Tout d’abord, j’ai prévu de sortir mon premier EP album en juin 2013. L’album sortira dans 3 langues différentes. Un avec les chanson uniquement en anglais, un en coréen et un autre en japonais. Je vais utiliser les mêmes beats sur chaque albums mais les raps dans différentes langues et featurings de différents pays paraîtront complètement différents. Donc gardez bien un oeil la dessus. En plus de ça, je vais contunuer à travailler sur mon propre label de musique “X.VO.I“, qui devrait être lancé dans un futur proche. Je ne peux pas vous en dire plus mais je peux vous dire que “X.V.O.I” signifie “Xee Veyond Original Instinct“. On travaillera probablement sur le recrutement du staff également. J’espère que tout ira bien.

– what are your resolutions/wishes for 2013?
First I’m planning to release my first EP album in june 2013. The album will be realsed in 3 different languages. One with songs only in english, one in korean, and the other one in japanese. I’ll use the same beats on each albums but rapping in 3 different languages and featurings from different country will sound totally different. So you all better keep an eye on it. Moreover, I will keep working on my own music label called “X.V.O.I”, which should be launched in the near future. I cannot tell you further but can only tell that “X.V.O.I” stands for “Xee Veyond Original Instinct”. We will probably be working on gathering staffs as well. Hope it goes well.

– As-tu quelque chose à avouer/confier avant que l’année ne se termine?
Je dois admettre que j’ai très souvent agi de façon pas très civilisée, particulièrement cette année. J’ai blessé les sentiments de beaucoup personnes. Parce que j’effectue mon service militaire, j’ai eu beaucoup de mal a organisé mes sessions d’enregistrements pendant les peu de jours de congés annuels que j’ai eu. Je prévoyais autant de travail que possible à chaque fois que j’avais un jour de congé, et restais tout le temps en studio. Je ne voulais pas dépenser, ne serait-ce qu’une minute de mon temps, à m’amuser. Et j’avais décidé de ne voir personne, sauf si j’y étais obligé, tant que je n’ai pas fini mon service. Donc je me suis concentré sur mon travail, sans me préoccuper des affaires des autres. Le temps a passé, et beaucoup de mes amis m’en ont voulu pendant un temps et on a eu du mal à briser la glace. Mais tout va bien maintenant. :]

– Anything you want to confess before the year ends?
I have to admit that I behaved in uncivilized way so many times, especially this year. I hurt numorous people emotionally. Since I am serving for the millitary, I was having a hard time setting up recording sessions within given yearly days-off. I planned as many works as possible everytime I got days-off, and I was always staying in the studio. I didn’t want to spend even a single minute of my time just playing around. And I decided not to meet anyone, unless I have to, as long as I am part of millitary service. So I started focusing only on my own work and didn’t mind other’s business. Time passed and eventually, many of my friends got a little mad at me for a while and we really had hard time breaking the ice. We’re all cool now though. :]

A ceux qui ont lu ma courte interview, merci de tout mon coeur. J’espère qu’un jour je serai assez célèbre pour faire une tournée en France. Je vais continuer d’essayer jusqu’à ce que je deviennes un rappeur-producteur mondialement connu. Pour y arriver, je vais avoir besoin du soutien de chacun d’entre vous, donc gardez un oeil sur moi!
